Start your Future

With a little piece of history

Choosing our campervan from Cathedral Campervans means choosing to travel in a little piece of history.  You’ll be part of a new generation of VIPs to use our rare 1965 Italian imported T2 Split Screen campervan.

  • OUR T2

Our first campervan is a rare 1965 Italian import from Milan.  This T2 split screen served its time at the Milan international airport.  Its main job was to ferry the VIPs from the terminal to their destinations.  You will be sitting in a van that has come full circle, serving the VIPs of yesteryear to the VIP wedding guests of today.

The 1965 T2 Split Screen VW campervan has now been afforded a full and total body makeover, stripping the bodywork right back to be sprayed in original VW Candy White paint.  The interior has also been complimented by a mixture of Jasmine White leather and Espresso Pear veneer.

The original twinport air cooled engine has been stripped and replaced by enlarged barrels and pistons, turning it from a 1600 to a 1641cc with increased power and durability,  allowing a trouble free, comfortable ride, unlike the original VIP rides!

  • Our “Bay Window”

After the production of 1.8million Split-Screen camper vans, a wholly new model was launched in August 1967. Now, popularly referred to as the ‘Bay Window’ Campervan, it differed from its predecessor in nearly all aspects. Volkswagens philosophy of providing a ‘box on wheels’ had not changed of course, and the engine was still air cooled and positioned in the rear, but there was a welcome increase in performance, road handling and a more spacious interior. The styling was different but instantly recognisable as a VW. By this time the campervan was not so much as a vehicle but, a way of life. By the end of the 60’s the Bay Window had a large cult following as the Split-screen camper and Beetle did. The camper vans completely classless image endeared it to ordinary folk and the rich and famous alike.

About Cathedral Campers

Cathedral Campers owner, Jamie Flowers, Has had an interest in vintage VWs for more than 25 years.  “It was my dad that first introduced me to the VW scene as a teenager when there was little interest in VWs.  The scene was barely noticable back then and deemed “uncool” by the majority of people.  My dad was taken aback by the sheer simplicity of these vehicles.”  Within six months Jamie had bought his first VW Beetle and moved on to campervans.

The split screen van we use has a wealth of history and it was a chance sighting in Italy that led to Jamie importing it to the UK.

“I first set eyes on her on the shore of Lake Garda whilst on holiday with my then girlfriend more than ten years ago.  It was only towards the end of the holiday that I realised the word VENISI in the window of the van meant For Sale.

After numerous phone calls the van was brought back to the UK.  It was then that Jamie found out the heritage of the van working at the Milan International Airport.

It really has come full circle and a full nuts and bolts restoration has taken place with no expense spared.  Virtually every part of the van is brand new or has undertaken some kind of restoration so you can be assured this one of a kind campervan will make your special day that bit more special.

Jamie says, “With the van’s rich history I really hope that people can get the joy out of the van that VIPs in the past did.  Seeing the look on people’s faces and the pleasure they seem to get really has made the restoration worthwhile and I hope people continue to enjoy it for years to come.”
